President Donald Trump Fires FBI Director James Comey; Search for New Permanent FBI Director Begins Immediately

White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters today that President Donald Trump has fired FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday.

“The president has accepted the recommendation of the Attorney General and the deputy Attorney General regarding the dismissal of the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” according to Sean Spicer in a statement to reporters in the briefing room.

The termination came just after the FBI confirmed Comey provided erroneous testimony to a Senate panel about how Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin handled classified emails.

Comey also has been under fire from Democrats for months over his announcement about the reopening of an e-mail investigation into Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton — less than two weeks before the November 2016 election.

The White House said Trump’s actions to fire Comey were based on the clear recommendations of both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. “The FBI is one of our Nation’s most cherished and respected institutions and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement,” Trump said in a statement.

A search for a new permanent FBI director will begin immediately, the White House said.

Letter from Trump to Comey Dated May 9, 2017

Dear Director Comey:

I have received the attached letters from the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General of the United States recommending your dismissal as the director of the Federal Bureau of investigation. I have it accepted their recommendation and you are hereby terminated and removed from office, effective immediately.

While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the Department of justice that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau.

It is essential that we find new leadership for the FBI that restores public trust and confidence and its vital law enforcement mission.

I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

Donald J. Trump
