Police Investigators report that 16-month-old Semaj Crosby was found dead late Wednesday night inside a home in southwest suburban Joliet Township.

At approximately 11:00 p.m. Wednesday April 26, 2017, the Will County Sheriff’s Office along with the FBI said they gained consent to search a home in the block of 300 Louis Road in Joliet Township. Police said an attorney the family had obtained was also present. At approximately midnight, they found Semaj’s body inside the home.

Semaj was last seen playing in her front yard with a group of six to eight other children, about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday April 25, 2017. She was described wearing a gray or pink long sleeved shirt with a picture of a cat on the front, dark blue jeans and was barefoot. Her hair was in multiple ponytails with white beads. An FBI notice reported she would answer to the names “Tink” or “Majay”.

Semaj’s mother told police she was going to take her daughter and her cousins for ice cream when their car wouldn’t start. As they were trying to jump the car, they said they realized Semaj was missing. Family members told police that Semaj had just learned how to walk.

Over 100 police and fire personnel from multiple jurisdictions as well as over 100 volunteers searched for Semaj Wednesday, officials said. Fire Department MABAS Dive teams searched six ponds, including a retention pond at nearby construction site. Firefighter/divers and support personnel from Blue Island, Elwood, Frankfurt, Lemont, Lockport, Manhattan, Minooka, Mokena, New Lenox, Orland, Palos, assisted the East Joliet Fire Protection District in searching the six ponds in the area.

The search for Semaj Crosby started Tuesday afternoon, when her mother told Will County Sheriff deputies that the baby had wandered away from the front yard.
