VIDEO: Security Guard Cleared in Fatal Bank Robbery Shootout at Alpine Bank on N Mulford Rd, Rockford

Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato announced today that the Metro Security Guard involved in a fatal January 20th, 2017 shooting of a bank robbery suspect at the Alpine Bank 2218 North North Mulford Road in Rockford, has been cleared. The incident was investigated by the Rockford Police Department and reviewed by the State’s Attorney’s Office and it was determined that the use of deadly force was justified.

An investigation into the guard’s use of deadly force shows that he was justified when he fatally shot armed robbery suspect Laurence R. Turner.

Rockford Police responded about 4:00 p.m. January 20, 2017 to a report of an armed robbery at the Alpine Bank. Security video shows that the bank robbery suspect Laurence R. Turner ran into the bank armed with a gun and wearing a blue mask. He fired a shot into the air, then pointed his gun and fired at the armed Metro Security Guard who was on duty at the time. The guard returned fire and hit Turner, fatally wounding the would be bank robber.

The armed Metro Security Guard officer is a retired Sheriff’s deputy and not working in a law enforcement capacity, according to police.

THC and opiates were found in Turner’s system during autopsy, according to Rockford Police Department.

Turner’s family was helpful and cooperative throughout the investigation, and were not complicit in his crimes, according to police.

Turner was linked to other armed robbery incidents including Mincemoyer Jewelry, Member’s Alliance Credit Union, and Harvard State Bank, according to police.
