Turkish security forces on Monday detained Uzbekistan national Abdulgadir Masharipov who is suspected of having shot dead 39 people celebrating the New Year at Reina, a popular Istanbul nightclub.
Bars have closed because the number of foreign tourists have plummeted and Turks fear venturing out, but also because of government restrictions on alcohol. “They come and say ‘your bar stools are too high’ or ‘if you’re a restaurant and people dance after dinner, you’re violating your licence’.”

Turkish security forces arrested a man suspected of carrying out an attack at an Istanbul nightclub on New Year’s eve, in the city’s Esenyurt district, Monday.
VIDEO BEFORE ARREST (Jan. 3, 2017) — Turkish government says it’s close to identifying the man who opened fire at a nightclub in Istanbul, killing 39 people on New Years Eve. New images of the attacker and fingerprints are being examined by investigators. So called Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, and says the man who fled the scene is one of its followers. Meanwhile, funerals have been held for some of those killed in the deadly rampage.
Turkish police released a video on Monday, allegedly showing a selfie recording by the Istanbul nightclub attack suspect, filming himself as he stares at the camera around Istanbul’s Taksim square. Turkish authorities do not know when or why the video was recorded.
