Barrington police and firefighter/paramedics responded at 3:40 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2017 to a report of an unresponsive 12-year-old boy. Firefighter/paramedics arrived and immediately began advanced life support treatment and transported the boy to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

Apparently, Jak Kallas, age 12, had been riding his bike with some friends on North Lake Zurich Road near Northwest Highway when his bike crashed, and he suffered a head injury.

Jonathan “Jak” Kallas, a seventh grade student at Station Middle School, was pronounced dead at 5:40 p.m. Saturday, at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

An autopsy determined Jonathan died from multiple injuries from falling off his bike, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A police investigation confirmed that the death was accidental, police said.

Barrington Area Unit School District 220 spokeswoman Morgan Delack said the district is saddened by the tragic accident and additional counselors and social workers will be prepared to meet students who need support at Station Middle School on Tuesday.

“Our top priority is wrapping support around our students as they cope with the loss of their classmate and friend.”

A GoFundMe Jak Kallas Expense Fund page has been established to help the boy’s family with the financial burden of medical treatment and burial.
