Union Pacific Freight Locomotive Hit Honda Accord — No Injuries.

Mount Prospect police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:12 PM Tuesday to a report of car vs train crash with injuries at Main Street and Prospect Avenue Mount Prospect, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics arrived to find that a westbound train consisting of two UP freight locomotives and a caboose hit a maroon ~1990 Honda Accord.

The driver, a male, age 82, was extricated with a quick extrication. He was transported to Northwest Community Hospital for observation, apparently with no injuries.

No serious injuries were detected at the scene.

The driver was apparently southbound on Main Street and hit the train gate that was coming down for the approaching freight locomotives. The gate scraped the roof of the car, and the Honda Accord almost made it across the tracks, but was struck in the rear trunk area by front locomotive.

The railroad crossing gate did not break, and was inspected later in the day.

Union Pacific reported the train was traveling about 35 mph when it hit the back end of the vehicle. The locomotives were not able to stop until about Pine Street, across from Mia’s Cantina, and about 950 feet from the point of impact.
