Neighbors Don’t Want 24-Hour Gas Station Near Homes at Northwest Highway and Race

Concerns were discussed at Monday’s Village of Arlington Heights Board Meeting about changes proposed for a gas station near a residential neighborhood.

Steven Chacko, the owner of the Marathon gas station at 1706 West Northwest Highway near Race Avenue, just east of Jimmy D’s District restaurant and bar, is requesting a special use permit from the village that would allow redevelopment of the .30 acre gas station/auto service property. The proposal involves converting the auto repair portion of Chacko’s business to allow for expansion of the convenience store in the 1,300 square foot building.

The converted business would re-open as a BP gas station, which Chacko said would required 24-hour operation, according to BP franchise rules.

Chacko proposed significant upgrades to the facade of the building, as well as site improvements including enhanced landscaping, l

Village Board members voted unanimously Monday night to revisit a revised proposal that would change the business hours, while confirming the 24-hour business operation requirement from BP.

“I’m not hearing anyone who is in support of a 24-hour operation out there,”

— Mayor Thomas Hayes

Residents in single-family homes and brownstones nearby expressed they do not feel a 24-hour gas station is appropriate near the residential neighborhood. The opportunity for armed robbers to hit the gas station during midnight or early morning hours compounded by the proximity to a residential neighborhood is also a concern.
