Fort Lauderdale International Airport was shut down for several hours when a FedEx cargo plane caught fire after its landing gear collapsed.

A FedEx cargo plane caught fire about 5:50 p.m. ET on a runway at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The fire caused the airport to shut down for several hours, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Video shot by an onlooker at the airport showed an explosion with flying debris out the port side or left side of the aircraft.

The pilot and copilot escaped injuries by using a rope ladder on the right side of the aircraft, according to Mike Jachles of Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue.

No injuries were reported on the aircraft or on the ground.

The fire occurred after the plane’s port side landing gear collapsed as it touched ground, the FAA said. The Boeing MD-10 was operating as Flight 910 from Memphis, Tennessee, where FedEx is based.

Most of the fire damage occurred on the plane’s exterior near the left or port side wing and engine. The interior of the plane, which was carrying FedEx shipments and US Mail, was apparently no damaged.

The fire occurred a few hours after an American Airlines passenger jet caught fire and the pilot was able to abort takeoff while the aircraft was rolling down the runway. see more at The Cardinal American Airlines Aircraft Fire Outside Fuselage at O’Hare Runway 28R; 170 Evacuated, 9 Injured
