Chicago firefighters began responding to arson fires about 2:43 a.m. Friday. A total of six or seven fires were reported between 2:40 a.m. and 3:40 a.m. Where the first suspicious structure fire was reported in the block of 2100 West 21st Street a man was found alive, but later died.

Firefighters extinguished the man’s garage fire, but later found him injured at the scene. CPR was performed at the scene, but he was later pronounced dead.

Within 20 minutes several alley garage fires were reported in a 2-4 block area around the 2100 block of south Wood St.

By 3:30 a.m. an apartment building was burning in the 2200 block of South Blue Island Avenue. Firefighters fought that fire from the front and rear of the building and elevated the fire department response to a 2-11 Alarm fire.

Several Chicago Fire Department investigators were at the multiple fire scenes overnight.
