Winthrop Harbor Fire Department responded about 1:00 p.m. Monday to a report of a man in the water near a sailboat about one-eighth of a mile east of the North Point Marina. The man, while wearing a personal floatation device had fallen out of the sailboat, but a second person on the sailboat was unable to pull him out of the water. The second person was able to use a cellphone and call for help.

Several fire departments and the Coast Guard stationed out of Milwaukee were requested to the scene to assist Winthrop Harbor Fire Department, but a firefighter crew on a Winthrop Harbor Fire Department boat was able to quickly arrive at the scene and help the man out of the water. He was transported to shore, where he was assessed by paramedics. The man in the water refused further medical treatment after he was warmed following the cold water exposure of Lake Michigan.
