Dallas police reported Friday morning about 7:40 a.m. that an assault shooting suspect was killed by a bomb that was detonated on the second floor of the El Centro College Parking Garage.

Police Chief David O. Brown reported that earlier reports that the suspect shot himself were incorrect.

Brown said a bomb was detonated by a robot that exploded a device as the suspect was cornered, confronted, approached by police, and was involved with failed police negotiations.

The extension arm of the robot carried an explosive device that was detonated near the suspect. After exchanging gunfire with the suspect, the police saw no other option but to detonate an explosive device near the location where the suspect was located.

The detonation is believed to have occurred at about 3:30 a.m.

Police Chief David O. Brown reported that the gunman stated he acted in reaction to the police killings of black people. The suspect stated he was upset about Black Lives Matter. The suspect said he was upset with white people. He stated he wanted to kill white people and that he especially wanted to kill white police officers. The suspect stated police would eventually find the other IEDs. The suspect stated that he was not affiliated with any groups and said that he acted alone.

Brown would not clarify the number of suspects involved because the police department wanted to keep the suspects guessing.

El Centro College had been placed on lockdown as a precaution because of the proximity of the protest at about 8:00 p.m. CT about one hour before the first shooting occurred at about 8:59 p.m.
