Games aren’t the only stars at E3. Online video streaming sites such as Twitch and YouTube Gaming have made stars of game enthusiasts who play video games and comment online. It’s a fun hobby that’s now serious business. (June 16)
Twitch (twitch.tv) is a live streaming video platform owned by Twitch Interactive, a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc and formerly Justin.tv. Introduced in June 2011 as a spin-off of the general-interest streaming platform Justin.tv, the site primarily focuses on video gaming, including playthroughs of video games, broadcasts of sports competition, creative content, and music broadcasts. Content was available live or via video on demand.
On August 5, 2014, the original Justin.tv site, which had a wide variety of video content, was suddenly shut down. The company announced a need to focus resources entirely on Twitch with its focus on video gaming, which was the most popular channel of the Justin.tv categories (News & Events, Entertainment, Social, Tech, Sports). On August 6, 2014, Ini order to improve the gaming experience, Twitch introduced an updated archive system, multi-platform access to highlights from past broadcasts (organized by a channel), higher quality video, increased server backups, and a new Video Manager interface for managing past broadcasts and compiled “highlights” from broadcasts that are export-capable to YouTube.
Amazon.com acquired Twitch Interactive for $970 million in late August 2014.
YouTube Gaming was launched August 26, 2015 as a platform for video gaming enthusiasts intended to compete with Twitch.tv
