Arlington Heights police responded on Friday, May 27, 2016 to a report of a bat captured in a home in the 400 block of North Haddow Ave. Arlington Heights Police Department Animal Control officers transferred the bat to the Cook County Animal and Rabies Control office and the Cook County office transferred the bat to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

On Wednesday, June 1, 2016 the village received a report that the bat tested positive for rabies.

Residents are advised to call the police at 847-368-5300 (non-emergency number) or 911 if you can’t remember the first number if a bat is found in the home.

Bats usually enter a home when an unscreened window is left open. They may also enter a hole created by a woodpecker in an attic wall.

Rabies is a deadly disease. The disease can be transmitted by a bite from the bat or when the bat’s saliva contacts an open wound, the eyes, the mouth or nose.
