Suspect Information on US Capitol CVC Shooter in Washington DC

During a press conference Chief Matthew Verderosa said police believe the suspect was known to authorities before the incident at the U.S. Capitol.

At about 2:39 p.m. ET a male drew a weapon during routine administrative screening. He pointed the weapon at officers and was shot. The suspect’s weapon. The suspect underwent surgery after being transported to a local hospital.

The lockdown was lifted at 3:40 p.m. except for the CVC which remained closed for processing of the crime scene. The act is believed to be a criminal act — not a terrorist act. Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa stated that the suspect was believed to be known by police.

An uninvolved 35 to 45-year-old female bystander also suffered minor injuries from the incident. Earlier the injuries were described as shrapnel injuries.

When Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa was asked by a reporter how police knew the suspect, Verderosa answered, “Through previous contacts.”

Capitol Police Chief Matthew R. Verderosa was promoted from Assistant Chief to lead the agency starting March 20, 2016.

USA Today is reporting that the suspect, Larry Dawson, was detained after being disruptive at a hearing.
