Three Chicago Police Officers Shot, Suspect Killed in Shootout at Polk and Independence

Chicago police, firefighters and paramedics responded about Chicago police report that about 9:40 pm. Monday, officers were investigating possible narcotics activity in the block of 3700 W. Polk Street. Police observed two suspicious individuals. As officers approached on foot to gather additional information, one of the subjects, a male, fled the scene. A foot pursuit ensued during which the offender ran through a dimly lit courtyard flanked by two buildings. At some point, the offender fired shots at pursuing officers. At least one of the officers involved in the pursuit was able to return fire — fatally striking the offender. A weapon was recovered on scene. Three officers sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to Level I Trauma Center Cook County Stroger hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Currently, the specifics of this incident, including the comprehensive use of force investigation are being investigated by the Independent Police Review authority with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department.

The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a period of 30 days. This new policy, which was implemented by the superintendent Escalante, will ensure separation from field duties while training and fitness for duty requirements can be conducted. Going forward, this will be standard protocol for all officer-involved shootings.

The crime scene, which was about two blocks long, was just south of the Eisenhower Expressway and Garfield Park Conservatory and about two miles west of the Illinois Medical District, which includes Rush Univesity Medical Center, University of Illinois Medical Center, Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County, and other medical and teaching facilities.
