The sudden near zero cold temperatures may have caused a “frost quake” in southeastern Wisconsin on Tuesday night, January 12th, 2016, according to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee. Some people reported hearing booms on Tuesday night.
Frost Quakes can occur when moisture or water in soil freezes suddenly — resulting in an expansion of ice in the soil. The phenomenon is also known as cryoseism. Fracturing of rock and soil can occur, which can cause a boom noise or rumbling.
The booms heard may also have been a sonic boom from military aircraft flying supersonic. The 115th Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard was conducting some night F-16 training at Truax Field in Madison, according to FOX6now.com.
