Lightning Strike or Blown Transformer Causes Power Outage Near Highland Ave and Fairview St, Arlington Heights

Heavy rain, lightning, a blown transformer, power lines down, and neighborhood power outages made an unusual December day for Arlington Heights, Illinois.

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:29 PM Wednesday to the block of 800 South Highland Avenue Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of a lightning strike. Firefighters on the scene discovered a blown transformer with power lines dropped on a chain link fence in the backyards between Highland Avenue and Vail Avenue.

A lightning strike was not confirmed, but moderate thunder was heard and heavy rain was in the area at the time of the downed lines report. NEXRAD radar also showed thunderstorms in the area.

There were sporadic power outages throughout Arlington Heights. ComEd reported about 136 customers were without power near the Highland Avenue, Vail Avenue, Fairview Street area.

Firefighter/paramedics warned neighbors about the hazard at the chain link fence and warned people to stay away.

About 56 customers were also without power near Golfview Terrace and Buffalo Grove Road.

Heavy rain also caused some street flooding.

As of 1:30 p.m. no Flash Flood alerts or flood-related alerts were activated.

A Wind Advisory was scheduled at 11:00 a.m. to be in effect from 6 PM CT Tursday to 3AM CT Friday. Sustained winds of 30 to 39 MPJH are likely and gusts between 45 and 57 MPH are likely.
