Senior Update- Dog–Woman’s Best Friend Too?

#ad▼

Dear Paul B,

Hi, Paul B, I love your column. It is a breath of fresh air, in an otherwise depressing news-landscape. My Ed passed almost four years now, and we were a very happy couple for 42 years. He was a great Dad, and a terrific friend. I found myself bored and lonely after all the “newness” of my single life became apparent. My kids are good, as they come by often, but the nights had been lonely.
I bought a little dog about two months ago, and I can only tell you that it makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE. Perry is a Shih tzu-Poodle, and he is a wonderful companion. I know that some people think they are more trouble than they are worth, but this little guy is with me everywhere, and a better “friend” does not exist, at least in my world. I go out with friends often, and they want to come visit me more, because Perry sits on their laps, and gives them attention as well. It’s like having a “good friend” around, but without all the headaches of pleasing him. I had a neighbor put up a little dog-run and I am all ready for winter. It’s no secret that pets are great companions, but I really don’t know what I would have done without Perry. I needed to share this with your readers, because it is a real game-changer. Thanks (in advance) for sharing, Paul B.

Ellen

Dear Ellen,

Good to hear that you and your new buddy are happy. I was going to suggest that you find a male friend as well, but you can keep an open mind to THAT as well. I don’t know if you ever had a dog before, but we picked one up 8 years ago, and he is by far my best “guy friend.” Our cats, dogs, birds, ferrets, can be sensational friends throughout their/our lives. You treat them well, and they will respond in kind. It really gives us a reason to get our butts out of bed in the morning too, right?

— Paul B.
