CBS 2 Chicago: Exploding Rechargeable Battery Packs for Cell Phones

CBS 2 Chicago Investigator Pam Zekman got a tip about an exploding rechargeable battery pack that she just had to check out.

A rechargeable battery pack from Sound Logic XT Powercell ($30) exploded and caused burns and damages estimated at $2500.

The biggest risk and concern is the use of cheap products and charging them while they are unattended.

Regarding the Sound Logic XT Powercell, 72% of reviewers on Amazon gave the product only one star. Reviewers reported loose connections and product’s failure to charge.

The Power cell product is designed to recharge phones via USB connection to computer or other USB power source. The company claims to provide a 5200 mAh power cell that works with Apple iPad, Apple iPhone, and Android smartphones.
