An explosion demolished part of a Motel 6 in Bremerton, Washington, on Tuesday night — critically injuring a gas company worker just minutes after the acting hotel manager had evacuated the building due to a leak.

Bremerton, Washington firefighters responded about 7:54 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a gas leak or gas odor. Hotel guests and staff were being evacuated when the explosion occurred at about 8:24 p.m. A witness reported that the explosion occurred about the time that a Cascade Gas employee arrived.

A gas company employee investigating the gas leak Tuesday night was critically injured with second- and third-degree burns. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Three guests of the Motel 6 were unaccounted for Wednesday morning.

Several firefighters and police officers were also knocked back about 20 feet by the explosions.
