Officials say dozens are confirmed dead after an explosion in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin. CNN’s Will Ripley reports.

According to the Tianjin government, more than 700 people were injured by the explosion — many with serious injuries, including burns and blast injuries on Wednesday, August 12, 2015.

Over one-thousand firefighters responded to the scene. Early reports indicate 12 firefighters were killed and 36 firefighters are missing.

Two explosions, captured on multiple videos, occurred within 30 seconds of each other occurred at a container storage station at the Port of Tianjin in the Binhai New Area of Tianjin, China. The cause of the explosions were initially reported to be explosive materials. Chinese state media released a information that the initial blast was from unknown hazardous materials in shipping containers at a plant warehouse owned by Ruihai Logistics. The secondary blast was larger and included a more intense and damaging shock wave.

A massive explosion shook the northern Chinese city of Tianjin late Wednesday, killing seven and injuring at least 180 people, according to officials and state media.

Huge, fiery blasts at a warehouse for hazardous chemicals killed at least 50 people and turned nearby buildings into skeletal shells in the Chinese port of Tianjin, raising questions about whether the materials were properly stored.

China’s official news agency now says at least 44 people are known dead in the warehouse explosions in the port city of Tainjin. 12 of the dead were firefighters. The blasts injured hundreds.
