A hatchet-wielding man, armed with what turned out to be a pellet gun, attacked a movie patron at a theater outside of Nashville Wednesday and sprayed others with pepper spray before he was shot dead by police, authorities said.
Nashville police responded about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a suspected “active shooter” incident at the Carmike Hickory 8 theater in the Nashville suburb of Antioch. A police officer entered the theater reported he believed the suspect pointed a gun at the officer, according toNashville Police Chief Steve Anderson said.
Police initially said they did not find a handgun, and then released the information that the firearm turned out to be an “airsoft” pistol that resembled a handgun.
The suspect killed was identified by police as Vincente David Montano, age 29, a resident most recently of Nashville. He was shot dead by SWAT officers as he exited the theater’s rear door, police said. Police reported he was committed for mental illness twice in 2004 and twice in 2007.
