A South Dakota firefighter was killed while assisting with containment efforts as wildfires continue to spread across California.

Firefighter David Ruhl of Rapid City, South Dakota, was killed Thursday as he was battling a fire in the Modoc Forest. That’s about 100 miles south of the Oregon border.

A series of wildfires blackened the golden hills of California on Friday, egged on by bone-dry vegetation, triple-digit temperatures and gusting winds.
