Amtrak Crash in Philadelphia; Crashed Train Was En Route from Washington DC to New York City

CNN’s Sara Sidner reports from the scene of an Amtrak passenger train derailment that has left at least five people dead and many more injured. A sixth person died overnight.

An Amtrak train is reported derailed in Philadelphia with injuries reported.

Officials have not confirmed injuries, but photos taken by former Pennsylvania congressman Patrick J. Murphy, who was aboard the train show people with visible cuts on their legs and faces. Rescuers are shown inside a toppled railroad car.

Officials say eight to ten cars derailed on the 2000 block of Wheatsheaf Lane in Philadelphia — south of the intersection of Wheatsheaf Lane and Frankford Avenue.

The front end of train 188, which was was en route from Washington, D.C., to New York City Tuesday night, reportedly derailed on a turn and several passenger cars went off the tracks.

Possibly 50 people are reported injured. About 240 are believed to have been on board the Amtrak train when it crashed. At least one passenger car looked severely damaged.
