Hillary Clinton Announces Presidency Online without a Press Conference

Hillary Rodham Clinton announced today that she will seek the presidency for a second time, one of her top advisers said Sunday, ending two years of speculation and establishing herself as the likely 2016 Democratic nominee.

The announcement came in emails from John Podesta, Mrs. Clinton’s campaign chairman, to donors and others.

“I wanted to make sure you heard it first from me – it’s official: Hillary’s running for president,” the email reads. “Mrs. Clinton will soon meet with voters in Iowa and will host a formal kickoff event some time next month.”

At this point, the campaign for Democratic nomination does not appear to have a large field of competition. If she wins, it would be the first time a woman captures a major party’s nomination.

Democrats will strive hard to maintain their position in the Executive Branch as Republicans control the House and the Senate. Republicans are likely to point to her failures involving Benghazi and other perceived failures as Secretary of State, lying about landing under sniper fire at Bosnia, character issues related to Bill Clinton’s scandal that involved White House intern Monica Lewinski and his impeachment, the use of her own private email server while working as Secretary of State, her claim that she turned over all work-related emails from her mail server, her claim that she deleted all the remaining personal emails on the server, and the Clinton’s claim that they were dead broke when they left the White House. Her husband, Bill Clinton, was president for two terms from January 20, 1993 – January 20, 2001.

In December 2000, with cash down payment of $855,000, Citibank lent the Clintons $1.995 million to buy a house in Washington, D.C. — apparently considered a safe loan by the bank. By February 5, 2001, Bill Clinton was commanding regular speaking fees of $125,000 or more. Politifact.com has considered their “dead broke” claim mostly false.

Hillary’s running for president because everyday Americans need a champion—and she wants to be that champion. Watch her announcement video to kick off the campaign.

In her 2008 campaign, Hillary downplayed gender and emphasized she was competitive as president. For the 2016 campaign, Mrs. Clinton plans resonate personally with women, including a highlight that she is a grandmother and that she has a chance to make history as the first woman president.

Critics claim Hillary Clinton chose to reveal her campaign on social media to avoid a news conference that could have involved some harsh questions.
