Nixie Wearable Drone: Winner of Intel’s “Make It Wearable”

Make It Wearable Winner | Meet Team Nixie.

Team Nixie (http://flynixie.com) is developing the first wearable drone camera, which can be worn around your wrist. The team presented their prototype for the Intel Make It Wearable Challenge Finale on November 3, 2014 in San Francisco and won the $500,000 grand prize.

The drone camera is carried as it is wrapped around your wrist, and with a gesture command will unfold off your wrist and fly away (remembering where it took off). The onboard camera can take a selfie or capture video while in flight like larger drones. When Nixie returns, it can be wrapped around your wrist again for wearable storage on your body. The drone weighs less than a tenth of a pound, but that doesn’t prevent it from capturing HD images and syncing with a smartphone.

The drone will have the following mode presets: Boomerang, Follow Me, Panorama, and Hover.

The drone might cost more than a GoPro initially, but might drop in price in line with a point and shoot camera if it is mass produced in greater quantities than the GoPro.

Second place went to Open Bionics for their low-cost bionic hand. Team Open Bionics is developing a 3D-printed prosthetic with the functionalities of a high-end device, but for a much lower cost. Open Bionics was awarded $200,000.

Third place went to ProGlove — a wearable production tool. ProGlove (www.proglove.de) is a sensor-based “smart glove” that can boost productivity for manufacturing jobs. Maybe Michael Jackson was on to something. ProGlove was awarded $100,000.
