Mexican Independence Day Celebrated Today in Mexico

#ad▼

Mexico celebrated its Independence day today. Huge crowds packed Mexico City’s Zocalo Square for the event.

The Grito de Dolores (“Cry of Dolores”), was heard from the small town of Dolores, near Guanajuato in Mexico, on September 16, 1810. The “grito” (cry) was the pronouncement of the Mexican War of Independence by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Roman Catholic priest.

The event of that day marks the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. Since 1825, the anniversary of the event is celebrated as Mexican Independence Day.
