Ask Paul B: Pot vs Big Gulp; Bottom Line, Uncle Sam Needs Your Money

#ad▼

Dear Paul B,

I don’t know how you feel about the new “marijuana laws” in Colorado, but I am not happy. I don’t see much resistance to this law, and I am probably in the minority. I am told that it will most likely be legally available in most states in the next two years or so, and I believe this is truly sad. My young son says that gambling, alcohol, cigarettes, guns, prostitution are already available, so why not add pot to the list. I bet you won’t print my letter. Do you have kids? I hope you say yes to both..

++++++++++++++++

Dear Sheila,

Yes, I have kids, two teenagers, and I don’t know why you would wish that upon me… what did I do wrong? Of course I would print this, and I am NOT a proponent of Colorado’s new marijuana sales law, although I lean towards my liberal roots. I truly believe that there was more press, pressure, and notoriety when Mayor Bloomberg tried to limit the size of The Big Gulp in New York. It seems that Americans have just tired of fighting the good fight, because I am not reading much opposition to the new legal weed law.

When you see big cities like Detroit going broke (Chicago could be next…,) we tend to prioritize the fear factor. Cities need to create tax revenues, and you’re looking at a nice chunk with the pot profits!! We know that kids will always find a way to buy it illegally if they want it. It is a fact that adults favor smoking pot as well as teens, but I don’t want to see a bad habit created at such a young age as school kids. It’s difficult enough to harness kids to study, let alone if they are high with the munchies. I am certain that weed will be available in all the 50 states at some point in time. Funny, I have managed to enjoy my life without alcohol, weed, cigarettes, and oh yes, prostitution… I would imagine that Uncle Sam doesn’t hold me in such high esteem on these taxable issues. We as parents will need to continue to lead our families by example, wether it is legally purchased or otherwise. “Under My Roof” remains my mantra.. Stand your ground peeps, and don’t give in…
