Fires with elevated flames and firenados witnessed near San Marcos.
Firefighters are battling wildfires Thursday that have burned about 10,000 acres in California’s San Diego County. The worst fire is the Cocos Fire — a nearly out of control blaze in San Marcos.
Grasses were so dry with humidity in the single digits in the area. Ignition conditions for a fire would take only a few hundred degrees. Heat from catalytic converters can amount to 2,500 to 3,000 degrees.
Alert San Diego, a countywide notification system, sent out nearly 122,000 emergency telephone notifications on Wednesday as the wildfires spread.
Carlsbad, California issued 23,000 evacuation notices.
California officials say 21,000 evacuation notices were sent to residents of San Marcos, north of San Diego. Also, 10,000 students were told to evacuate a local college campus. A huge fire broke out in San Marcos on Wednesday.
