CNN’s Jake Tapper talks to Pentagon’s Rear Adm. John Kirby about how the U.S. plans to help Nigeria rescue kidnapped girls.
On April 14-15, 2014 at night, approximately 276 female and mainly Christians students were kidnapped from the Government Secondary School in the town of Chibok in Borno State, Nigeria. The Chibok kidnappings were claimed by Boko Haram, an Islamic Jihadist and Takfiri terrorist organization based in northeast Nigeria.
The students are reported to have been forced into marriage with members of Boko Haram, with a reputed “bride price” of ₦2,000 (Nigerian naira) each ($12.50/£7.50).
At least 53 of the students have escaped by May 2, 2014.
May 3rd and May 4th, protests were held in major Western cities including Los Angeles and London. At the same time, the hash tag #BringBackOurGirls trended globally on Twitter as reports of the crisis were shared.
