3 Killed in Shootings at Jewish Community Ctr and Jewish Assisted Living Ctr, Overland Park, Kansas

Overland Park police in Kansas responded at 1:03 p.m. Sunday to shootings at two separate Jewish-related locations. The first call regarding shots fired was reported from the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City, 5801 W. 115th Street, where there was an immediate death at the scene. A second person critically injured was transported to a hospital and later died. Both shooting victims at the Jewish Community Center were males that were shot outdoors at the back of the building.

A second shooting was reported at Village Shalom, which is an assisted living center at 5500 West 123rd Street. A female third victim at Village Shalom was shot and killed at the scene.

Early as the incident was reported, there was a report that one person was undergoing emergency surgery at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. That person is the second person that was fatally shot at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City.

The first shootings that occurred at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City, were initially reported to have occurred at the Lewis and Shirley White Theatre inside the center, but the shootings actually occurred outside at the back of the theater. Teens were auditioning for KC Superstar auditions at the time of the shooting.

According to an early report by Kansas Highway Patrol, a shooting suspect was in custody.

Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass confirmed that a suspect was taken into custody without incident at an Valley Park Elementary School at 123rd Street and Lamar Avenue. He is scene on news video. The suspect is reported by police to be a male/white in his 70s with a beard. A shotgun was involved. There was also possibly a handgun and an assault weapon involved.

There is no indication at this time that the suspect knew the victims. The suspect was not known to the Overland Park Police Department until today.

Worried parents, children and relatives of victims at both locations have been seeking information on the details of the shooting. The Village Shalom location had been placed on lockdown.

Police confirm there were no other injured victims, but that there is early report prior to confirmation of an investigation that gunfire was pointed in the direction of at least five other people.
