Accident Investigation: Fatal Crash Rand Road Near Thomas St, Arlington Heights.
On March 10th, 2014, at about 12:15 PM, officers from the Arlington Heights Patrol Division responded to a fatal traffic crash in the 1000 block of east Rand Rd in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
The crash involved five vehicles. One of the vehicles was northwest bound in the southeast bound lanes. Four of the involved vehicles were traveling southeast bound on Rand Rd between Dryden Ave. and Thomas Ave. These four vehicles were described as: a gray 2011 Volkswagen Golf, a silver 2002 Honda Civic, a tan 2001 Toyota Sienna and a gray 2013 Hyundai Elantra.
The fifth vehicle, a red 2006 Chevrolet Colorado was northwest bound on Rand Rd, driven by its sole occupant, Mr. Stanley Ksiazek, a 51 year old man from Palatine, Illinois. As the vehicle neared the intersection of Rand Rd. and Thomas Ave, the pickup truck left its proper lane(s) of travel and entered the southeast bound lanes, now traveling the wrong direction.

The vehicle narrowly missed colliding with several vehicles in the southeast bound lanes before striking the 2011 Volkswagen Golf, 2002 Honda Civic, 2001 Toyota Sienna and 2013 Hyundai Elantra just north of Thomas. After colliding with the other vehicles, the red 2006 Chevrolet Colorado left the roadway, rolling over and coming to rest in a driveway on the south side of Rand Rd.
As a result of the crash, the driver of the 2006 Chevrolet Colorado, Stanley Ksiazek, died. A post-mortem examination of Ksiazek was tentatively scheduled for March 11, 2014. It was unknown as to why the 2006 Chevrolet Colorado entered the wrong lanes of traffic. In addition to driving the wrong way, the 2006 Chevrolet Colorado was also traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash.
Additionally, as a result of the crash, the driver of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf, Mr. Anatoliy Elkind, a resident of Vernon Hills, Illinois was critically injured. As of 10:00 AM on March 11th, 2014, Elkind remained in critical condition at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Illinois.
Two other drivers also received non-incapacitating injuries. One was transported to Good Shepard Hospital in Barrington, Illinois, while the second was transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
Police Department accident reconstructionists will be continuing their investigation into the incident.
