Two National Anthem Anniversaries You Should Know

#ad▼

Yesterday was the 83rd anniversary of “The Star-Spangled Banner” being recognized as our national anthem by a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931. The resolution was signed into law by President Herbert Hoover.

A more significant anniversary is coming later this year.

In Baltimore Harbor in 1814, the British Navy prepared an assault for a devastating blow to the young United States of America. Many felt that the taking of Fort McHenry would mean an end to the United States, and a return of the territory to be ruled by “The Crown” once again. Francis Scott Key, a young ambassador and poet, was invited on board the British Ship HMS Tonnant to negotiate the exchange of prisoners. Francis Scott Key witnessed an all night barrage on the fort by the Navy with little hope of an American victory. As the smoke cleared the next morning September 16, 2014, the United States Flag was still waving atop the fort, and Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the poem, “ The Defense of Fort McHenry” which became the United States National Anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.”

The 200th Anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner will commence in 2014. An historic concert series will take place beginning in the spring of 2014 and will continue until the culminating event June 14, 2014 – Flag Day. Concerts will be staged throughout Washington DC and Baltimore Harbor.

The Star Spangled Banner Spectacular will celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the National Anthem. The schedule for the week long celebration from September 6, 2014 through September 16, 2014 includes the arrival of Tall Ships, an Air Show with the Blue Angels, Public Ship Tours at the Inner Harbor, Public Navy Ship Tours, a Patriotic Concert, Flag Raising at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, fireworks and more.
