Federal prosecutors on Thursday announced they will seek the death penalty against 20-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in the Boston Marathon bombing, accusing him of carrying out a terrorist attack calculated to cause maximum carnage.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder Thursday, January 30, 2014 authorized the U.S. government to seek the death penalty against April 15, 2013 Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokar Tsarnaev. Chechen brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev allegedly killed an MIT police officer, carjacked an SUV, and initiated an exchange of gunfire with the police in Watertown, Massachusetts after the FBI released photos of the suspects. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a shootout with police, and Dzhokhar was found hiding in a boat stored in a residential backyard following an intense manhunt that shut down the cithy of Watertown Massachusetts.

“After consideration of the relevant facts, the applicable regulations and the submissions made by the defendant’s counsel, I have determined that the United States will seek the death penalty in this matter. The nature of the conduct at issue and the resultant harm compel this decision,” Holder said in a statement.
