More than 15,000 Illinois residents have applied for concealed carry permits in the first 72 hours Illinois State Police began accepting applications (by January 9, 2014). Chicago officials worry about having enough resources for the background checks.

Illinois State Police (ISP) officials Tuesday, January 7, 2014 released its first round of Concealed Carry License (CCL) application numbers after the CCL application was officially posted on the ISP website and available to the public on Jan. 5, 2014.

The early application process that started on December 18, 2013 provided the Department with the opportunity to beta test the capacity of the system and officials say that there have been no significant problems during the week leading up to the Jan. 5 launch.

“We are pleased with the ease of the process so far and have had dedicated staff to address any unforeseen issues,” said ISP Colonel Marc Maton. “The beta testing provided us with the ability to assess any capacity issues and we will continue to monitor the progress, especially during the first week,” he added.

ISP officials opened the application process to firearms instructors and applicants who submitted electronic fingerprints in advance of the Jan. 5 launch, to test the integrity of the system, its functionality and capacity.

Nearly 7,000 applicants were able to apply in advance of Jan.5, and 4,525 CCL applicants applied on Jan. 5.

One hundred and five (105) applications were classified as incomplete and were rejected. Some examples of an incomplete application include missing information, insufficient training, invalid or missing photo, and failure to provide 10 years of residence information.

The Department’s Concealed Carry website address can be accessed at http://www.isp.state.il.us/. The ISP will continue to regularly update its Concealed Carry FAQ’s on the website with information regarding the Illinois Concealed Carry program.
