Ask Paul B: Football…. Dangerous? But Hit on Bengals Punter Kevin Huber Illegal

#ad▼

Max Kellerman and Marcellus Wiley debate if Terence Garvin’s vicious hit on Bengals punter Kevin Huber was a dirty play. Bengals punter Kevin Huber, received a devastating hit from Steelers linebacker Terence Garvin on Sunday that broke his jaw and cracked a vertebra in his neck.

Dear Paul B,

I saw the most vicious hit during a football game Sunday, and it just sickens me how these animals try to maim one another. I remember that a player named Stingley was paralyzed many years ago. I am an old timer, and I have watched football for 54 years plus, but I don’t recall players this brutal. Are you a sports fan, Paul B? What say you? I am curious.

Dear FB Fan,

How do you believe that football players are motivated? “Hit hard, hit ’em fast, and let them know that you’re coming after them!” their coaches preach. Football is a violent sport, this is a fact. Defensive players are trained to knock the ball out of receivers hands, intimidate them, and scare the living heck out of them. This is a fact! This is not tennis, curling, chess or badminton. This is the ultimate mano a mano game. Darryl Stingley, late of the Patriots, was taken down by Jack Tatum of the Raiders in 1978. This was a shoulder to helmet contact, whereas Stingley had lowered his head into the shoulder of Tatum, to minimize the blow. Unfortunately, the hit compressed his spinal cord and he spent the remainder of his life a quadriplegic. He was a standout player, and also a Chicago native. Players today are much stronger (weights, condition training, healthier diet) faster and as competitive as I have ever seen.

The money that these players can and do earn is outlandish. The fans call for blood, and the players will accommodate when possible. I see a thirst of players to inflict pain on others, even when facing monetary fines and suspensions. The game of football is a game of warriors and a solid “hit” is what the defensive coaches teach. I am quite surprised and equally thrilled, that there have not been serious injuries to players, as had occurred with Mr. Stingley. I can only tell you that I will NOT allow my son to play the game…’Nuf said?

BTW- Mr Stingley, who passed in ’07, began a not for profit charity for troubled Chicago youth…He was a very generous and caring Chicagoan.
