Apple’s plans for a futuristic headquarters resembling a spaceship has been approved, and is expected to “land” in 2016.

Apple received final approval from the City of Cupertino for the construction of its new futuristic circular glass headquarters

The Apple headquarters designed by the noted British architect Lord Norman Foster, and has been previously been described as a ‘doughnut’ or a ‘spaceship’. Steve Jobs made a rare public appearance at a Cupertino City Council meeting in June 2011 to gain approval for the projectd. The appearance would fatefully be his last public appearance before he died.

Apple’s current Cupertino campus holds fewer than than 3,000 employees, but the new headquarters could place 12,000 in one building. The total global workforce at Apple, Inc. is almost 50,000 people. The headquarters will have its own energy generator, a 100,000 square-fitness center, and a 120,000 square-foot auditorium.

Apple’s Senior Director of Real Estate & Facilities, Dan Whisenhunt, provides a presentation on the Apple Campus 2 project at the October 1, 2013 Joint Study Session of the Cupertino City Council and the Cupertino Planning Commission.
