Ask Paul B: Spend 10 Minutes with Kids

#ad▼

Hey Paul B,

I am a parent of a teenager. I would rather not give my name because it might hurt other families who have suffered losses. My daughter went to school with a wonderful girl for six years. She had been at my house often, been part of a car pool, and even baby-sat a niece of mine for a few months. She seemed to have few, if any, problems. Sometimes, kids can hide these problems from us, and we find out only too late. This young lady was the victim of a senseless death, one that I am certain, could have been avoided. She was unhappy about many things, and had a poor “communication” with her Dad, with whom she lived. I can only tell you that there was shock, sadness, and many questions about her death. She had only “tried” to demonstrate her unhappiness with no intention on the ultimate tragic result. Without discussing the specifics, I can only compel parents to achieve this two way communication with these kids. They are only kids, and they don’t have the skills (many adults don’t either) to figure out life’s complicated problems. If you need to spend extra time to extract this information from them, it is of utmost importance.

I know that we are all very busy with our lives, but our kids do need to know that we’re here to help them figure out “options and solutions,” as we know there typically are. Don’t wait, folks….do it today. Thanks for listening/reading.

Dear Phillip K

There is absolutely nothing to add. You have made a very valid point, and I hope others are taking charge and opening this “gate” today!! Thanks so much…
