Bryon Champ, 21, and Kewane Gatewood, 20, both of Chicago, have been charged with three counts each of attempted murder and aggravated battery with a firearm related to the September 19, 2013 shooting incident that injured 13 people, including a 3-year-old boy who was shot through the ear and mouth.

Shell casings found scattered on the basketball courts near Wood Street at 51st Street were 7.62 mm rounds, which are commonly used in AK-47 assault rifles, and are also known as .30 caliber rounds — a British Imperial unit equivalent. The AK-47 weapons are rarely used in gang attacks on Chicago’s South Side.

One of the men is suspected of using a military-grade assault rifle to fire at least 16 bullets that injured the 3-year-old boy and twelve other people. The other man is suspected of being a “participant” in the crime and the getaway. Champ and Gatewood are scheduled to be in Central Bond Court Tuesday morning in the Cook County Criminal Courthouse at 26th and California.
