Electronic Cigarette Prohibition Goes Into Effect for People Under 18 on January 1, 2014

#ad▼

Governor Pat Quinn signed a law Thursday that prohibits anyone under age 18 from buying electronic cigarettes. The law goes into effect January 1, 2014, and requires store clerks to check photo IDs of any person who “appears to be under 27” and approve the age requirement before selling any electronic cigarettes or similar products. Stores that fail to comply with the new law will be subject to fines of $200 or more.

While electronic cigarettes do not contain tobacco, they are are filled with flavored nicotine. The products are falsely advertised as having minimal health risks, but exposure to nicotine is believed by proponents of the law to be a factor in causing addiction and other negative health effects.
