Pope Francis has celebrated his first Easter Mass today as 250,000 people packed St. Peter’s Square. On Saturday night, he celebrated a trimmed back Easter Vigil service at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Pope Francis, who has emphasized a humbler style to the papacy, said: “Peace to the whole world, torn apart by violence linked to drug trafficking and by the iniquitous exploitation of natural resources! Peace to this our Earth! May the risen Jesus bring comfort to the victims of natural disasters and make us responsible guardians of creation.”

Today’s Urbi et Orbi, means “to the City [of Rome] and to the World”) — a papal address and Apostolic Blessing that is given to the City of Rome and to the entire world, on certain occasions, including Easter.
