Northwest Community Healthcare in Arlington Heights partnered with the popular bookstore Barnes and Noble this holiday season to collect more than 1,500 donated books for patients in the Pediatric department. Picture, board and chapter books were all collected in the month-long book drive.

“This is such a wonderful partnership for our pediatric department,” said Joanne Borck, pediatric department manager and coordinator of the book drive for NCH. “The books donated for the kids really make a difference during their stay, whether they’re a patient or here with a family member.”

Through the Holiday Book Drive at Barnes and Noble stores, more than 1,500 books, including some written in Spanish and Polish, were collected for the Pediatric department. Staff distributed the books and a teddy bear for children who were admitted at NCH. NCH’s partner, Women in Need Growing Stronger (WINGS), also benefited from donations, as well as NCH’s Health Library and waiting rooms.

“We knew NCH is well regarded in the community and we wanted to reach the children who might be in the hospital during the holidays,” said Leslie Metcalf, merchandise manager for Barnes and Noble in Arlington Heights.

Every year, Barnes and Noble stores hold holiday book drives for customers to purchase and then donate new books. Barnes and Noble stores in the northwest suburbs selected NCH as the recipient of the picture books, board books and chapter books. “It’s our chance to try to help give back,” Metcalf said. “We knew we wanted to reach out to NCH.”

NCH’s Pediatric inpatient unit has approximately 2,000 admissions annually and the Pediatric Emergency Department sees more than 10,000 children per year.
