Highland Park police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:18 AM Sunday November 4, 2018 to a report of multiple people in the water in Lake Michigan near the North Shore Yacht Club, 21 Park Ave Highland Park, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of a person in the water, then a report of multiple people in the water at the North Shore Yacht Club. A MABAS Box Alarm 33W with all Division 3 Boats and divers was activated for multiple people in the water at 9:31 am. for a difficult rescue operation.

UPDATE: A 46-year old Itasca man died and a 52-year-old Elgin woman was missing Sunday and Sunday night after participating in a cold water swim event. Police and public along the shoreline of Lake Michigan were alerted to be on the lookout for signs of the woman or the woman’s body. body

Witnesses at the scene reported seeing CPR administered at least one person. One person was immediately rescued out of the water within about 20 minutes of the initial call for help.

The second person was reported in view at 9:45 am. The victim, apparently the Elgin woman — was reported to be about a quarter mile north of the boat ramp at the North Shore Yacht Club and about 100 feet offshore as rescue boats were approaching the victim. When a rescue boat almost capsized twice, the crew returned to shore. An early report had initially indicated both victims were north of the water plant.

A MABAS Fire Box (33F) for extra personnel was activated at 9:51 a.m.

Initially Cardinal News reported that a second person was reported removed by 10:02 a.m., but this was actually a second report of the removal of the first rescue with CPR that occurred about 9:40 a.m.

Firefighters and divers faced rough water and high winds during the rescue operation in Lake Michigan. The rough water and high waves caused at least one of the rescue boats to almost capsize twice while en route to rescue the second victim.

A National Weather Service (NWS) Gale Warning was in effect at the time of incident and rescue operation. The Gale Warning was activated from Winthrop Harbor to Wilmette Harbor-Wilmette Harbor to Northerly Island-
Northerly Island to Calumet Harbor-Calumet Harbor to Gary-Gary to Burns Harbor-Burns Harbor to Michigan City.

Weather hazards expected …

WINDS…Southeast gales to 40 kt.

* SIGNIFICANT WAVES…to 11 ft.

* OCCASIONAL WAVES…to 14 ft.

A Gale Warning means winds of 34 to 47 knots (39 MPH to 54 MPH) are imminent or occurring. Operating a vessel in gale conditions requires experience and properly equipped vessels. It is highly recommended that mariners without the proper experience seek safe harbor prior to the onset of gale conditions.

Firefighters and divers from Countryside, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Park Ridge, Prospect Heights and more joined the rescue operation as part of the MABAS Box Alarms.

The US Coast Guard was in the air by 10:22 a.m. to assist with search of the Elgin woman and any additional victims, and to provide help for any divers or rescue boat crews that might face trouble during the rescue operation.

This report is an early report and details have not been confirmed by official sources.
