WANTED: HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER; POLICE SEEK INFORMATION
Schaumburg police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 12:40 AM Saturday to a report of a man down in the roadway — possibly hit by a vehicle — near Friendship Village at Schaumburg Road and Branchwood Drive. The victim has since been identified as Schaumburg High School senior, Mikias Tibebu, 18.

Police are seeking a hit-and-run driver after the death of Mikias Tibebu — recognized as an Illinois State Scholar and National Achievement Award winner, beloved friend and athlete, and a committed member of the Cross-Country and Track teams at Schaumburg High School.

Police shut down Schaumburg Road in both directions after finding the
victim on the south side of Schaumburg Road near the entrance to Friendship Village. Police reported CPR was underway just before firefighter/paramedics arrived. Several motorists turned on their emergency flashers around the scene to form a safe zone. Schaumburg firefighter/paramedics continued treatment with CPR and Advanced Life Support. However, Tibebu was pronounced dead at the scene at about 1:00 a.m.

Schaumburg Road was closed in the area, and the Schaumburg Police Department’s Investigations Division and Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team was called out about 12:50 a.m. Schaumburg Road was re-opened at about 5:45 a.m. when investigators cleared the scene. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office is also working on the investigation.

No word on any arrests or charges, or whether the offending vehicle was located, or if there is a description of a possible offending vehicle. Several motorists stopped to help the Mikias Tibebu, and some were starting CPR as police arrived. Mikias Tibebu lived a few blocks from the scene.
