Alberta is located in western Canada, bounded by the provinces of the coastal British Columbia to the west and Saskatchewan to the east, the Northwest Territories to the north, and the US state of Montana to the south. Alberta is one of three Canadian provinces and territories to border only a single U.S. state and is also one of only two provinces that are landlocked.

Dinosaur Provincial Park protects a very complex ecosystem including three communities: prairie grasslands, badlands, and riverside cottonwoods. The ecosystem is surrounded by prairies but is unique unto itself. Coyotes are common at dusk, along with nighthawks with their calls and white-banded wings. Cottontail rabbits, mule deer, pronghorn, prairie rattlesnakes, bull snakes and red-sided garter snakes are also residents of the park. Curlews and Canada geese are among the 165 bird species. Even cactus, including Opuntia (prickly pear) and Pediocactus (pincushion) grow in the park and are seen in full bloom during the later half of June.
