Atlanta Police Helicopter Crash During Search & Rescue Mission for Missing 9-Year Old

A police helicopter flying low over Atlanta on a nighttime search for a missing 9-year-old boy plunged to the ground in a neighborhood of shops and apartments, killing the two officers aboard, authorities said Sunday.

Two Atlanta police officers were killed about 10:30 p.m. Saturday while on a search and rescue mission for a missing 9-year-old boy who was later found safe.

A police helicopter hit power lines near the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Hamilton E. Holmes Drive near Interstate 20,

After hitting the power lines, the helicopter hit the ground and exploded on impact with the ground. Several witnesses were close enough to the crash that they needed to run to safety.The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating Sunday.
