Bicyclist Dies in Hospital After Hitting Open Door of Parked Car on Dunton Ave Near Thomas St, Arlington Heights

Accident Investigation: Bicyclist Hits Open Door of Parked Car on Dunton Avenue, just north of Thomas Street, Arlington Heights.

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 11:54 AM Tuesday September 4, 2018 to a report of a traffic crash with injuries in the block of 1400 North Dunton Avenue, just south of the intersection of Dunton Avenue and Thomas Street in Arlington Heights, Illinois.

The crash involved a single parked motor vehicle and the bicyclist. The vehicle, a red 2015 Kia Optima, was parked in the southbound direction on the west side of the block of 1400 North Dunton Avenue, just south of Thomas Street. At the time of the collision, the owner was retrieving belongings from within the vehicle, leaving the driver’s side door open to the street. The bicyclist was traveling southbound on Dunton Avenue from Thomas Street, approaching the location of the parked motor vehicle. The bicyclist, a 63 year-old male from Arlington Heights, struck the open car door on the 2015 Kia, as well as the vehicle owner. The collision caused the bicyclist to fall to the ground. The bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained life-threatening head injuries resulting from the fall. A witness, who saw the crash, said the man was unconscious immediately after the crash.

Firefighter/paramedics arrived immediately, and administered Advanced Life Support treatment, while calling extra firefighter/paramedics to the scene. The bicyclist was transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge by Arlington Heights Fire Department firefighter/paramedics. Initially, the bicyclist was listed in critical condition. The bicyclist, was not carrying any identification at the time of the crash, but later was identified as Glenn Richmond, a 63 year-old resident of Arlington Heights.

On September 5, 2018 at 5:31 PM, the Richmond succumbed to his injuries, and was pronounced dead at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Lutheran General Hospital. The Cook County Medical Examiner was notified, and a post-mortem examination was scheduled for September 6, 2018.

The owner of the vehicle, who was struck in the back while standing at the driver’s side door, did not initially report any injuries.

The Arlington Heights Police Department Crash Reconstruction Unit responded immediately after the crash, and is continuing their investigation of the crash.
