Crime scene on Hatlen Avenue, Mount Prospect early Sunday.

Mount Prospect police responded about 5:09 a.m. Monday to a report of family problem/burglary involving a man in his 50’s attempting to break into a home in the 0-99 block of Hatlen Avenue. Police received a report that a man — possibly a brother of the family — was attempting to break into a home with an axe.

Three minutes later police received a report that a gun was pointed at a man on the front lawn, and that shots were fired. Police were also on the scene about three minutes after the first call. Police immediately called for firefighter/paramedics for a man shot in the leg.

The man was transported to Northwest Community Hospital with police following.

Later, a member of the family, said a brother and a veteran, who has not been the same since returning from war, arrived at the house with a knife, and was shot. The veteran and older brother had apparently been threatening his younger brother, who lives at the house. He said the man that came to the house was shot in the knee, but the injury was not life threatening. Some of the people at the house were transported to Mount Prospect Police Department Headquarters as part of the investigation.
