Chicago NATO UAV Drone Over Elgin a Fake? HOAX Killer Provides Rationale with Perspective Analysis

HOAXKiller1: “This video has been getting attention around the web, and is causing people to have mixed reactions. Little do they realize the video is fake and their reactions are unwarranted. ” [The video has been taken down due to a copyright claim by Ted Hueckstaedt]

A YouTube channel known for exposing hoaxes on videos posted on YouTube has shown how the video of a UAV drone claimed to have been spotted over Elgin is a hoax. A video from YouTube channel HOAXKiller1 explains how an understanding of perspective and parallax exposes the fraud, and shows the original still image that was superimposed in the original Elgin video. According to YouTube, the channel for HOAXKiller1 has since been terminated because of ‘numerous third-party claims of copyright infringement regarding material the user posted.’

In the video that was removed, ‘HOAXKiller1’ detailed the reasons he believed the video was fake. First, the author explained that the angle of the wings of the aircraft in the Elgin video doesn’t shift position as should occur as an aircraft passes. The shift in angle is a perspective shift known as parallax. People are familiar with parallax every day if they use an analog clock or watch. If you want an accurate time to the minute, you must look at your clock straight on. If you look from the right, the time will appear to be a minute later (with the minute hand to the left of the mark). If you look from the left, the minute hand will appear to show time a minute ahead of time (with the minute hand to the right of the mark). The same parallax effect should change the relative position of the wing tips as the aircraft passes by in the video. However, they remain at the same angle, as if a still image was superimposed and dragged into the video frames. As the aircraft passes, the right wingtip (starboard) should move forward relative to the left (port) wing tip.

If parallax is a little hard to understand, the more incriminating evidence is the discovery of the still image of an MQ-1 predator drone that was allegedly used to create the hoax.

HOAXKiller1 also reports finding the still image that allegedly looks exactly like the image used in the video.

The HOAXKiller1 video does a good job of aligning the discovered still image with the image in the Elgin video.
