Boy Pulled from Lake Michigan Near Waukegan Harbor Dies

A 14-year-old boy, who was rescued Friday evening August 17, 2018 from Lake Michigan water in Waukegan Harbor died this weekend, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. The boy was swimming in a channel in a restricted area, and was underwater for about 30 minutes before being pulled out by fire department divers Friday evening.

Waukegan Fire Department firefighter/paramedics were dispatched about 6:00 p.m. Friday to a report of a person who went under the water at the Waukegan Harbor and Marina near Madison Street and Harbor Place.

A Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) Dive Box was activated to the Second Level to bring in fire department divers, boats and sidescan sonar techs and equipment from fire departments in the area.

The boy was transported by paramedics to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, where he was listed in “extremely critical condition.” His identity was not initially released.

Waukegan Fire Marshal Steve Lenzi said that the boy was with three other teens in the water. A witness reported the boy went under water near a breakwall at the pier.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, August 20, 2018.
